REDLIN ART CENTER TO HOST NORMAN ROCKWELL EXHIBIT

Beginning in June 2008, the Redlin Art Center, in partnership with the Watertown Community Foundation, will host “Norman Rockwell in the 1940’s: A View of the American Homefront”. The traveling exhibit, on loan from the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, features 44 framed original tear sheets from the Saturday Evening Post magazine covers. The collection includes Rockwell’s famous “Four Freedoms” – “Freedom from Fear”, “Freedom from Want”, “Freedom of Speech”, and “Freedom to Worship”. These covers, in particular, played a significant role in the life of South Dakota artist, Terry Redlin. The exhibit will be on display at the Redlin Art Center from June 1st through August 9th, 2008.

The Watertown Community Foundation has awarded the Redlin Art Center a grant to defray the cost of renting the exhibit. The Watertown Community Foundation awards grants to programs and projects in Watertown which respond to needs in the areas of civic affairs, arts and culture, human service, education, health, and the environment. For more information about the Watertown Community Foundation, please visit www.watertowncommunityfoundation.org

Because the work of Norman Rockwell so inspired Terry Redlin; and because the two artists, although with very different styles, depict life in rural America, the Redlin Art Center believes this exhibit will be of interest to many.

Note: This exhibition has been organized by the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.

Special Note: Terry Redlin has been invited to be our GUEST OF HONOR this year so he can enjoy the festivities. There will NOT be a signing event.

Admission to the special event is free. Parking is provided in the park surrounding the Redlin Art Center and complimentary shuttles are available. Guests are invited to bring a lawn chair or a blanket for the outdoor concert. Seating is first come, first serve. Food and beverage vendors will be on location to provide an array of delicious and refreshing treats! Mark your calendars today and make your travel plans early – hotel rooms fill fast! Don’t miss this memorable occasion at the Redlin Art Center!

Note: All events outdoors will be held weather permitting. Show times are tentative.

Terry Redlin Conservation Park

terry redlin
The 30 acres surrounding the Redlin Art Center have undergone a dramatic transformation. The grassy area has been excavated to create numerous waterways, earth has been molded and shaped into hills and valleys, and trees have been strategically placed. This is Terry Redlin's vision - many refer to the park as Redlin's living painting. With each carefully positioned stake, Redlin has defined the contour of the landscape just as he does each time his paintbrush touches canvas - only this time, we have been able to watch his creation develop.

Guests of the park are invited to stretch their legs, walk their pets, have a picnic, or simply enjoy nature. Corn feeders are positioned throughout the park for those who wish to feed our friendly geese!

With an "eye" that only a true artist has, Redlin has created his idea of a perfect accompaniment to his son's carefully designed building. The park, officially titled, "Terry Redlin Conservation Park", is meant to enhance the visits of the thousands of travelers that stop at the Redlin Art Center each year. With over one mile of walking trails, 8 bridges, 6 small gazebos, one large gazebo and the Redlin Pavilion, guests of the park are invited to stretch their legs, walk their pets, have a picnic, or simply enjoy nature.

It is Redlin's wish that the wetlands and waterways he has created and enhanced will be full of wildlife. Wood duck houses and blue bird houses have been carefully positioned. There may even be opportunities to watch pheasant, grouse, and perhaps even an occasional turkey. The natural areas have been seeded with prairie grasses and wildflowers to provide cover and food for the animals that make the park their home.

The walking trails wind throughout the different areas in the park from the formal groomed areas leading to the Pavilion to the natural areas that lead to the outskirts of the property. Redlin hopes that visitors will find the park a relaxing experience that will allow them to collect their thoughts and enjoy the great outdoors - that is, after all, what inspires Terry Redlin each and every day.

Redlin Pavilion

PavillionBeautifully placed in the center of the Park where the waterways meet is the Redlin Pavilion. This octagonal structure with its architectural symmetry serves asPavillion Revised sculpture for the surrounding landscape. Currently only available for private corporate events, the Redlin Pavilion is fully equipped with a kitchen, restrooms, dining room seating for 100 guests and a spectacular view. The interior is furnished with red impala granite, black galaxy granite, a breathtakingly beautiful chandelier and eight larger-than-life, illuminated panels featuring the eight images from Terry Redlin’s “America the Beautiful” Series.
